HISTORY OF YAH
We started in 2013 as the TobacNO Youth Coalition, focusing primarily on educating our peers, community members and local leaders about the harms of tobacco use. Our projects included organizing a cigarette butt pick up in Old Town Fort Collins and parks, creating an art project to raise awareness about tobacco issues, and providing public comment to City Council about tobacco policies like smoke-free parks and trails.
Since then, we have changed our name to Youth Action for Health and expanded our focus to include all relevant youth health topics. We’ve organized a photovoice challenge encouraging youth to take photos and share a stories about health in our community. This year, YAH members have also decided to prioritize mental health and substance abuse in our community. Therefore, in September 2018, we hosted Treat Yo’ Self, a back-to-school event promoting self-care and introducing new and healthy ways to manage stress. Currently, we are working towards building support for a youth center in Fort Collins that will be a space created by youth for youth where everyone and anyone can seek help, get involved in the community, and create healthy habits.
